Unit Plan:        Making Healthy Food Choices

Dear Parent,

Do you know where your food comes from?  In this unit, our class will be focused on the art of eating and making healthy food choices.  This unit will not only teach adolescents about how and where food is produced but also about how to make sensible food choices.  Also addressed in this unit are issues that affect the global food market (such as the environmental impact of limiting “food miles,” the distance foods travel from where they are produced to where they are consumed).

Students will learn how to use computer software in graphic design, become aware of how the food we eat affects people’s jobs, animal welfare, and the environment.
Explanations will be given to students as to why and how the global food business and the demands of supermarkets affect agriculture, our eating habits and our health.  Students will also be shown video resources pertaining to world food issues regarding commercial agriculture, and fair trade organizations that help small farmers.

The project in this class will be for each student to design a cover for their Able 2010 year book.  Students will create their own personalized cover using computer software including Photoshop.  Students will present their project to the class for peer review and a final grade.

On the back of this page is a list of assignments, due dates, and the grading scale for your child in my class. Please sign and return the last page for student credit.  Any questions or if you would be interested in chaperoning one of this unit’s field trips, please contact me.
